Took to dealer and they suggested checking rear liftgate off button on dash which was in the on position. A power rear gate is available to allow automatic opening even when your arms are full and for added convenience a single touch on the gate button lets it close and lock the entire vehicle. When we try to use the hand free function by placing our hand or arm over the subaru emblem it will only open about 50 of the time.

The available power rear gate gives you instant access to the cargo area at the push of a button. The solution my dealer came up with was to reset the solenoid which he did by locking and unlocking the power door buttons on the driver door several times in a row. Loading all that cargo is even easier with the available hands free power rear gate which allows automatic opening even when your arms are full and lets you close and lock the entire vehicle with a single touch on the gate button. Now we are having an issue with the power liftgate.

And thanks to height memory you can also program the gate to open to a set height to keep it from hitting something overhead. The opening height can also be adjusted when clearance is limited.
